Mitzi – The Puppy

We have always kept a dog in our family home for as long as I can remember, however after the last dog we had passed away at the grand old age of 16, my mother said she couldn’t go through the heartbreak of losing a dog again because it was so upsetting.

A few years passed and my mother used to talk about dogs quite often (especially westies) but again kept saying that it would be too sad when they passed away. However, after talking to my siblings we decided to buy another dog as a surprise for my mothers birthday as it was long overdue, we knew another dog would actually be beneficially to our parents (which I will explain later on).

In October 2000 my brother and I went on a mission to find a West Highland Terrier dog. First of all we searched every dogs home and canine rescue centres in the Manchester area in search of a westie who needed a loving home all to no avail. We did meet lots of loving dogs in our search, but after leaving every dog home we both came away in floods of tears because we could take all the dogs home with us.

Eventually we found a lady who kept pedigree West Highland Terrier pups so we headed off to meet her. Once we arrived we could see three little balls of white fluff all huddled together but as soon as they heard us talk that was it – they were up! One of the pups caught my eye immediately, it looked like it hardly had any fur on its head and it looked so scruffy and tatty we both thought that is the one!

Our mothers birthday was a week away so I kept Mitzi the puppy at my house for the week. Mitzi had everything she needed, a super comfy bed, lots of toys, treats, food, warmth and love. This didn’t stop her crying as soon as we turned the light out when we went off to bed though! After 4hrs of getting up from our bed to check on Mitzi every five minutes, my husband and I decided to move her bed to our bedroom so we could keep an eye on her. But low and behold as soon as the light went off she started crying. Basically it was like looking after a new born baby, we cuddled her until she went to sleep in our arms, placed her gently in her bed and then crept back to our bed, grabbed 30 minutes of sleep with the light on then the crying started again. Despite our black baggy eyes at the end of the week we couldn’t resist her, she was so adorable so we found it hard when we surprised my mother with Mitzi on her birthday.

Little did we know we would have years of strange, comical, feisty, funny moments with Mitzi the Westie.
