If you are considering buying a West Highland Terrier then please read on.
Westies are sociable little dogs and they love being around people. If you are out at work for most of the day or lead a hectic lifestyle which takes you away from home quite often, then maybe consider a different breed of dog.
West Highland Terrier dogs love being involved in family activities. If you are going out for a long walk, having friends round or doing the gardening you can guarantee a Westie will want to be there, next to you. They are very sociable dogs and like to be there even if they are just observing what is going on.
If a Westie is left at home alone for a long periods at at time it may develop behavioural problems such as excessive barking, digging or chewing. Basically this means that the dog is bored, it is craving attention which it so rightly deserves.
Mitzi certainly gets enough attention from my family, maybe too much sometimes, but she is a lovely dog.

From the experience I’ve had of looking after Mitzi all I can say that despite her naughty little moments, she is such a loving little dog.
If we crouch down to stroke her she will place both front paws on your wrist/arm and then if you put your other arm around her you can feel her hind leg going up and down until she catches your arm then pushes herself up to you so she’s nice and close. Basically she’s like a miniature guard dog with a big loving heart.
Once you’ve got hold of Mitzi in your arms she will then try to smother you with kisses and licks etc. Another habit of hers is to put a paw either side of your neck and she then places her head at the side of your face and presses her head to yours. It’s as if she’s giving you a great big westie hug, bless her.
When my mum returned from having an operation at hospital Mitzi knew something was different, she seemed to be very careful near my mum. It was as if she was saying “I know somethings different here, I won’t jump on you because I know you are hurting, but I’m still here for strokes and cuddles when you need me”. Mitzi seemed to sense she was still very poorly and clung to my mums side for weeks on end.
If a family member returns to the house after an hour or so, Mitzi runs to them at full throttle, screeching and yelping as if they have been away for years!
If you have a West Highland Terrier I do hope your dog is as loving at Mitzi.
